The Carolina Theatre of Greensboro presents special Pride Month screening of ‘But I’m a Cheerleader’

Posted

In recognition of Pride Month, the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro will present the 1999 satirical romantic comedy, But I’m a Cheerleader on Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. Included in the movie ticket will be a live drag show hosted by Brenda the Drag Queen, and featuring Malayia Chanel Iman and Dana St. James.  After the show, join in for Cheers & Queers where you can meet these fabulous queens in the lobby for cocktails and mingling.

MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Megan (Natasha Lyonne) considers herself a typical American girl. She excels in school and cheerleading, and has a handsome football-playing boyfriend, even though she isn’t too crazy about him. So, she’s stunned when her parents decide she’s gay and send her to True Directions, a boot camp meant to alter her sexual orientation. While there, Megan meets a rebellious and unashamed teen lesbian, Graham (Clea DuVall). Though Megan still feels confused, she starts to have feelings for Graham.

As seen on TLC’s hit show “My Big Fat Fabulous Life”, Brenda The Drag Queen is the triad’s own live-singing, shade-slinging, comedy monster. Greensboro’s reigning Green Queen, Brenda hosts shows from across the Carolinas to the islands of Mexico and is known for her standup comedy style and hilarious parodies.

Known as “The Gams of North Carolina”, Malayia Chanel Iman has been entertaining audiences across the Carolinas and beyond for more than two decades. Malayia holds many prestigious titles, including Miss Gay United States, Miss Gay Latina Asheville, and North Carolina Entertainer of the Year.

Known as “The Showgirl of the South,” Dana St. James is one of the original house cast members at Legends Nightclub in Raleigh. She is also the first Miss Legends and has been a professional female impersonator for decades. Dana has traveled across the country, holding titles like Miss NC USofA and Miss World, and is now known for her incomparable illusion as Dolly Parton.

This event is sponsored by Triad Health Project, Out at the Movies, Carolina Aging Alliance, and Impact GSO.

The movie will be shown with open captioning in partnership with Communications Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Captions are visible to everyone in the auditorium and will show along the bottom of the screen in time with the movie, similar to foreign language film subtitles.
