Career Day at Bessemer Elementary School enlightened students about careers as visitors representing more than two dozen public and private organizations, academic institutions and governmental agencies discussed their respective professions. On hand were people representing a variety of occupations and fields of study such as agriculture, health care with Duke University, Guilford Technical Community College’s Cosmetology program, the City of Greensboro’s Police Department, and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, to name a few.
“The purpose of our Career Day is to expose our students to the various careers out there and to get them thinking about what they would like to do in the future,” said Tanya Dixon, school counselor and Bessemer Career Day organizer. “We want to educate students on the importance of advancing their education and [understand] the plethora of available career opportunities.”
All grades entered the multipurpose room where they could interact with career participants. Dixon said students were encouraged to dress for success.
In the school parking lot, commercial businesses brought their vehicles for students to explore. A favorite vehicle present was a fire truck from the Greensboro Fire Department.
Principal of Bessemer Elementary is Jonathan Brooks.
