This year, Juneteenth became Freedom Friday with events, celebrations, and commemorative activities throughout Greensboro. Those events included a spirited painting crew from Creative Greensboro, which devoted most of the day to refresh the 2020 Black Lives Matter street mural on the 200 block of S. Elm St.
The International Civil Rights Center & Museum convened a presentation on Black Patriots of the American Revolution, which featured a video narrated by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The discussion focused on the 1781 titular Battle of the Guilford Courthouse where 44 men of African descent fought the British under the command of Greensboro’s namesake, Gen. Nathaniel Greene.
Juneteenth weekend also featured the Third Annual Triad Farmers’ Market at the historic Hayes-Taylor YMCA, where community organizations and regional farmers featured and sold their harvests, enjoyed music and danced.
