HUFOY Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Back-to-School Rally

Posted

Heads Up for Our Youth (HUFOY), a Guilford County educational-economic empowerment organization, celebrated a decade of serving children by producing a multifaceted Back-to-School Rally featuring entertainment, a charity basketball game, a fun zone, complimentary haircuts/shape-ups, and, of course, 1,000 complimentary book bags filled with school supplies.

For nearly three hours, families streamed into the Special Events Center of Greensboro’s First Horizon Coliseum, visiting 30 community groups that provide health-wellness support, Kindergarten registration for Guilford County Schools, mental health and family counseling resources, after school mentoring programs, workforce educational support and a GCS job fair for substitute teachers, food service personnel and transportation services.

“From school readiness to family wellness to job access, this event created one big bridge to opportunity,” said Dwayne Shaw, executive director of HUFOY. “We’re celebrating a decade of purpose, passion, and people coming together for progress.”

HUFOY awarded $1,000 scholarships to high school graduates for academic achievement, leadership and community service. The scholarship recipients were Imani Colbert, University of North Carolina at HGreensboro; Jeremiah Jett, High Point University; and Jordan Neal, Guilford Technical Community College.

A youth charity basketball game between two area teams comprised of 13 to 16-year-old student athletes captured attention. Halftime featured a dunk contest, a three-point shootout, area school cheerleaders, and a tug-of-war contest. The nearby Fun Zone featured pickleball, golf links and cornhole games.
