Posted

GIBSONVILLE, N.C. - Eastern Guilford’s flag football team’s defense continued its suffocating run while the offense scored in every single quarter on Monday night, Oct. 5, powering the Wildcats to a 28-0 conference shutout of neighboring Northeast Guilford Rams.

Since this game on Oct. 5, the Wildcats of Eastern Guilford defeated Northern Guilford 51-0, High Point Central 31-0, Asheboro 28-0, and Southeast Guilford 37-0. With these victories, Eastern Guilford has extended its flawless campaign to 13-0, 7-0 in conference    play.

The Wildcats set the tone right out of the gate, striking for six points in the opening frame and tacking on another touchdown in the second quarter to carry a 12-0 lead into the halftime break. Rather than taking their foot off the gas, Eastern Guilford expanded the margin with a nine-point surge in the third quarter before sealing the 28-0 triumph with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Under center, quarterback Mauri Jerman (#5, junior) commanded the offense with steady rhythm and accuracy, finishing 12-of-18 through the air for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Even when Northeast Guilford’s secondary managed to force three interceptions, Jerman consistently found open lanes downfield, keeping target Raniya Lyons (#9, junior) heavily involved in the passing schemes.

On the ground, Harmony Yelverton (#0, junior) delivered explosive efficiency out of the backfield, piling up 41 rushing yards on just four carries—averaging over 10 yards a touch to keep the Rams off balance.

Defensively, the Wildcats were impenetrable. Eastern Guilford denied Northeast Guilford any red-zone traction, pitching their second consecutive clean sheet against the Rams and shutting them out across all four quarters.

For Northeast Guilford, the defeat against the Wildcats dropped the Rams to 1-3, however at press time, scores for the Northeast’s games against High Point Central and Southern Guilford were unavailable. The Rams will face High Point Central again (6:30 p.m.) and Southeast Guilford (8 p.m.) on Oct. 19. Eastern Guilford will look to maintain its undefeated season as it faces Southeast Alamance (Oct 14, 6:30 p.m.) Southern Guilford (Oct. 19, 5 p.m.) and Northern Guilford (Oct. 19, 6:15 p.m.).
