East dominates West in high school All-Star games

For the first time in four years, the East All-Star boys’ basketball team ended the West’s winning streak in the N.C. Coaches Association All-Star basketball game. The game was held Monday night at the Greensboro Coliseum, with the final score being 98-83.

The East’s Jermaine Cunningham of Swansboro scored a team high of 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was selected as the game’s MVP.

By the end of the first half, the East led 45-39 and shot 43.6 percent from the field. The West shot 37.5 percent with three-point shooting at two of 15.  

The West took a 55-51 lead in the middle of the third quarter. The East went on an 8-0 run in the third to score 21 of the final 25 points in the period. Rocky Mount’s Anthony Jones slammed a huge dunk, while Swansboro’s Cunningham scored six in a 6-0 run by himself that included an electric four-point play.

The East led by 13 entering the fourth quarter, 72-59.

In the girls’ East West All-Star game, East player Jasmine Nivar (Apex Friendship High School) was named MVP Monday night. The East defeated the West 97-85. Nivar scored 25 points and 11 rebounds.

At the half, the East was led by Nivar’s 12 points. By the third quarter, the West battled back to make the score 69 East to 62 West. The door shut for the West as the East dominated and wrapped up the win.
