Chat and Chew at New Hope Gardens

Posted

The Greensboro community is in for a treat. Did you know that sleep is the first determinant of longevity? This is followed closely by the second determinant of longevity, the quality of the food that you eat. You are what you eat, is often said; however, most do not totally understand its importance. To that end, there will be a free community event held to help you improve the quality of the food you consume.

One of our local food professionals, Chef Ngai Dickerson, and local nutritionist ShLanda Burton, a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, will be at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Gardens on Saturday, August 24th, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a cooking demonstration.

Rev. Walter Richmond, pastor and head gardener of New Hope, will lead a tour of the church’s beautiful community garden, where participants can pick vegetables to take home.

The tour will be followed by a demonstration of cooking garden vegetables, with Chef Dickerson emphasizing the old ways of cooking. He promises an easy-to-prepare, tasty treat.

Burton will then discuss why nutrition is so important and how these and other vegetables can be easily incorporated into one’s everyday diet.

This will be followed by a fabulous tasting of the foods that can be taken home along with the recipes.

This is a wonderful way to start off the weekend with information and a meal to go.

This is the kickoff event to a series of spectacular happenings that are designed to build healthy communities. These events will encompass a triad of topics consisting of food, fitness and mental health. All the events are free and designed to help build and address the needs of the community. Amgen supports these healthy living events.

Please put this on your to-do list. Let us know you are coming so we can prepare enough food and enjoy the first of our community events. Look out for other events coming soon.

Saturday, August 24, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 306 English Street; Greensboro, N.C 27401.

See you there.
