Bengals and Golden Eagles Win HAECO Titles

GDS 55, Bishop McGuinness 33 (Women)

The Greensboro Day School Bengals captured their first HAECO Invitational Championship with a 55-33 defeat of Bishop McGuinness. The Bengals were led by Candice Williams, a junior guard, who scored 18 points and was named Tournament MVP. Teammate Samantha Collins contributed 14-points while Liz Wyrick added nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

The Bengals broke open the game in the second half with a 32-17 run. The Villans’ Claire Sullivan finished with 10 points.


Smith 68, Page 65 (Men)

Smith won their first HAECO Tournament Championship since 2002 with a 68-65 victory over Page. It was a game that lived up to the hype with nine lead changes and seven ties. Leading 66-65 with less than 30 seconds left in the game, the Golden Eagles’ Jaylon Bumpass scored on a jumper in the lane. He finished with 14 -points and was named the Men’s Tournament MVP. Teammates Micah Cowan contributed 14 points and Gage Lattimore chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jackson Sellars, a senior guard, led the Pirates with a game high 27 points.
