Andrews 16
Ben L. Smith 14
HIGH POINT, N.C. — A high school football game between the Ben L. Smith Golden Eagles and the T.W. Andrews Red Raiders ended Friday night not with a game-winning play, but with an alleged act of violence. While the Red Raiders celebrated a hard-fought 16-14 victory, the final score was overshadowed by an accusation that a Smith High School player punched a referee at A.J. Simeon Stadium.
According to the High Point Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. A player from Smith High is accused of striking a referee, who was evaluated at the stadium for minor injuries and did not require further medical attention. Police have stated that charges will be filed.
Guilford County Schools was quick to release a statement condemning the action. They emphasized that "the unfortunate actions of one student athlete do not reflect the values or standards of our district" and that “this type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) also weighed in, highlighting a “concerning rise in ejections related to unsportsmanlike behavior this year.” The NCHSAA’s statement reinforced its commitment to sportsmanship, stating that officials are “essential partners” in providing athletic opportunities for students. The organization is aware of the incident and continues to “emphasize the importance of sportsmanship and respect for all persons involved in education-based athletics.”
The game itself was a defensive battle. T.W. Andrews’ defense held Smith scoreless for two full quarters. On offense, the Red Raiders’ victory was a team effort, with quarterback Cayden Zellous leading the charge with a touchdown pass and 47 yards rushing. The win moved T.W. Andrews to 4-0 on the season; meanwhile, Ben L. Smith’s record stands at 1-2.
Up next, both Andrews and Smith will enter conference play this Friday, September 19 with Andrews traveling to Randleman, and Ben L. Smith set to play Western Guilford. Kickoff begins for both games at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 19.
